1895 Boston Beaneaters Ticket Earliest Known Boston Major League Ticket PSA

Exceedingly rare nineteenth-century Major League ticket stub issued for a game between the Boston Beaneaters and Louisville Colonels held at the South End Grounds in Boston on June 8, 1895. PSA has encapsulated the ticket and certified it as “Authentic.” This is, to the best of our knowledge, the earliest Boston Major League ticket ever to surface. The ticket, marked “Open Stand” and displaying a large red “B” on the front, is dated “June 8, 1895.” Both the Row (“4”) and seat number (“5”) also appear in print on the front. As noted by PSA on the label, future Hall of Fame pitcher Kid Nichols gained the victory for Boston that day as he went the distance in a 17-3 win. It is also noted that future Hall of Fame third baseman Jimmy Collins had two hits against Nichols in the loss. Interestingly, Collins, who began the season with Boston, was “loaned” to Louisville on May 19th and did not return to Boston until the following season. (The loan was actually a sale of his contract but with an option for Boston to recall him.) Nineteenth-century Major League tickets are rare. This is one of just a few that we have seen, and the fact that it represents the earliest example from one of baseball’s most venerable franchises makes it especially significant. The ticket stub (2.25 x 1.75 inches) displays a vintage pencil notation on the reverse that reads “Louisville 17-3” and is otherwise in Excellent condition overall.
